Getting around Kauai on your vacation
Once you arrive on Kauai you will need to decide how you plan on getting around. There are a lot of transportation options and the one you choose will be determined by your preferences, budget, and the amount of people in your group. The most popular methods of getting around Kauai include taxis, rental cars, buses, motorcycle rentals, and sports cars.
Taxis are an ok choice for getting around Kauai if you simply need a ride from the airport to your hotel or aren’t planning on using the service often. The reason why is that the taxis are expensive so if you wanted to tour Kauai this way you would spend way too much money.
Rental cars are the very best option for getting around Kauai, especially if you want to do so affordably. Rental cars are frequently more affordable on Kauai than on the continental US and there is plenty of competition to keep the prices down. Most all tourists choose to rent a car when they arrive on the island so they can easily tour the different cities whenever they choose and save money while doing so. There are a variety of rental car companies at the airport and reservations are always a good idea. The most popular companies include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National and others.
When renting cars make sure you have proof of insurance, your license, and a major credit card.
If you don’t want to rent a car or are too young to then perhaps you will enjoy the bus system. The Kauai Bus has a route from Kekaha to Hanslei. Fares cost approximately $1.50 and there are plenty of stops along the route. You might need to ask locals about some stops because they aren’t marked so well. If you are planning on staying for a while you might enjoy a $15 monthly pass.
For those of you who are traveling solo or as a couple you might consider motorcycle rentals for getting around Kauai. Of course, a large group could also rent many motorcycles if this is your thing. Driving is safe yet you shouldn’t rent a motorcycle if you have never driven one. The last thing you want is an accident to ruin your trip. Also, motorcycle rentals are rather expensive to the tune of $209 overnight or $69 for three hours. Some of the motorcycle rental agencies in Kauai include: Pacific Island Rentals and Hawaiian Riders. Scooters or mopeds go for about $50 per day and have a minimum age of 18.
Traveling in style is definitely an option on Kauai, even in the most expensive sports car. Of course, you will need insurance and some extra money to spend, but if your desire is to cruise the island in your dream car it is certainly an option. Keep in mind the available options are not always wide and a one day rental fee could cost you $400. Hawaiian Riders has exotic cars for rent although you might have to take what you can get if you don’t make prior arrangements. Minimum age is 25 years old.
