Surfing in Kauai

Even if you are not a surfer you have probably heard of the amazing waves in Hawaii. That is no rumor and the waves are in fact out of this world. Because of this surfers from all over arrive in Kauai for great surfing and big waves. In fact, Hanalei Bay is one of the best surfing locations on all of the Hawaiian Islands. It’s not an easy place to surf and only experts you surf here. Other Kauai locations that offer great surfing include Cannons, Kalihiwai, Kalapaki, Infinities, and Kealia.

Fortunately you don’t have to arrive on Kauai knowing how to surf. You can simply learn when you arrive! That is right, there are plenty of surfing schools that will be more than willing to set you up and teach you how to surf. The following surfing schools are great places to contact if you want to learn.

Learn to Surf
If you want to learn to surf then you might consider contacting the company Learn to Surf. It’s an easy name to remember and the instructors are absolutely wonderful, probably the best on the island. Ninety minutes of instruction costs about $40. They will find out which beach has the best conditions on the day of your lesson and take you there. This is really a great company and they do an outstanding job. You can even rent a board here if you don’t have one of your own.

Another good surfing school is the Margo Oberg Surfing School. She was a surfing champion and provides two hours of surf lessons for $50. There are a variety of instructors that work there so you may or may not get the former surfing champion as your instructor.

Yet another surf school is Windsurf Kauai. This company provides a 90 minute lesson for $60 at Hanalei Bay. After your lesson you can keep the surf board until the end of the day. It’s a nice bonus if you are going to take the surf lesson and then want to practice for the rest of the afternoon.

Renting a Board
Some folks come to Kauai and they already know how to surf. So, these people just need to rent a surf board. Depending on where you are staying your hotel may be able to help you out.
