Windsurfing and Kitesurfing Kauai

Two cool activities you can take part in while on Kauai are windsurfing and kitesurfing. You may be a pro at both or know nothing about either one. Regardless an overview of both of them and where and how you can get started will help you out. Then, it is up to you to make reservations and enjoy all the fun Kauai has to offer.

Windsurfing
Windsurfing is a lot of fun but the requirements for this activity are not found all over Kauai. You will find that ‘Anini Beach is a good place to windsurf because the winds are high and there is a long reef there.

A great place to take lessons is at Windsurf Kauai. The instructor charges $75 for three hours worth of lessons and the staff specialize in teaching beginners how to windsurf. Your three hour lesson will be made up of learning and practicing. ‘Anini Beach Windsurfing is yet another company that offers windsurfing lessons. The price here is $75 for two hours. If you just want to rent the board it is $25 per hour of $50 for the entire day. Boards are not rented at the beach so if you want to rent one you will need to do so from the actual locale. If you do rent a board you might find good conditions for windsurfing at Salt Pond or Maha’ulepu. If you are a good windsurfer already then you will know what kind of conditions to look for.

Kitesurfing
Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, is a derivative of windsurfing but it is not exactly the same thing. It has become a super popular activity on Kauai and many tourists have never heard of it when they arrive.

Kitesurfing is more difficult to learn than windsurfing, but once you master it you will enjoy it significantly more than you ever did windsurfing. Getting started is a little difficult, but you can do it. Kitesurfing uses a shorter surfboard than normal and both ends have fins. There are feet straps that keep you stabilized on the board. Then, there is a kite with two lines. It simply pulls you along the water. You do have control of where you want to go, but going with the wind is always an easy option if you are just learning.

If you want to learn to kitesurf while on Kauai you might consider ‘Anini Beach Windsurfing. The instructor is outstanding and prices are $400 for a five hour lesson. If two people want to learn the price is $600. That is a lot of money, but if you really want to learn it is a good investment.

Aloha Surf and Kiteboarding also offer lessons. Theirs are just $75 per hour with a minimum of two hours. If you want to see what kitesurfing is all about, but don’t to actually take lessons then you can visit Kapa’a Beach Park to see others enjoying the fun.
